A long overdue blog post. This is my newest project, the MG Sandrock. I am planning to paint this in the EW colours and add some details that the straight kit sort of lacks. I want to finish my EW kits as a set so this is what I decided to work on next. So far the progress is going much faster than my last project. I've worked on this for a while and put some pics up on Instagram, but I haven't been up to date on this blog.
The snapped kit:
There's not much surface details or anything remarkable. Pretty simple build.
Head Details:
I wanted to make the head a bit more aggressive. So I elongated the chin to make it more pointy. I also modified the face plate to give it a more angular appearance. This was all done with Tamiya epoxy putty, where I add a blob of the material and sand it down to shape:
I also wanted to remove the major head seam at the side of the helm. This meant painting the face first and masking it so I can cement the helm seam and prime the rest of the head.
Backpack:
Next I worked on the backpack. I added some vents from spare parts and added a fair amount of panel lines to make it appear to have more separated panels.
Progression of the center crotch piece, mostly using 0.2 mm Mr. Line chisel. I really like how this turned out, especially with the added camera-like piece made from the yellow part.
Modification of the waist plates. I didn't really like the acute angles in the original design so I made substantial changes.
I also made the side panel into a single piece to get rid of the acute angels and strange parts separation of the original.
Final comparison of the waist unit:
Chest unit:
For the chest, the biggest challenge was caused by losing the hinge piece that connects the hatch to the cockpit. I looked for it for hours, but finally gave in and scratch build this using wire, tubing and epoxy. I didn't think it would work too well, but it did. Really shows that anything can be fixed.
It was a setback but at least it works. I also added some detail parts on the chest piece using spare parts and plaplate
Torso detailing:
Putting together the torso with a before and after comparison. Most of the details are done, I may scribe some more notches as I fix the imperfections and get it ready for painting.
That's it for now. Hopefully I get back into a routine of posting the blog. Currently working on the shoulder and arms. For more immediate updates, follow my Instagram: @yulongsgunpla
Until next time.
